Total’s Laggan-Tormore wins global award

The IPTC annual award for ‘Excellence in Project Innovation’, which looks for the most innovative oil and gas project completed anywhere in the world over the last year, has been awarded to Total for its West of Shetland Laggan-Tormore development.

The award was presented in Bangkok to staff from Aberdeen-based Total E&P UK who led the Laggan-Tormore project. The award reflected the high level of technical innovation Total had to display in order to complete this challenging project.

The Laggan-Tormore development consists of a 140 kilometre tie-back of five subsea wells to the new onshore Shetland Gas Plant, which has a capacity of 500 million standard cubic feet per day. Following treatment at the gas plant, the gas is exported to the UK mainland via the Shetland Island Regional Gas Export System (SIRGE). Gas from Laggan-Tormore now supplies around 8-10% of the UK’s daily natural gas requirements.

Elisabeth Proust, Managing Director of Total E&P UK, said:

“We are very proud to receive this award from the IPTC. The award recognises how innovative and responsible Total was in developing this project.

“In what was a first for the UK, Laggan-Tormore integrates new technologies that connect deep-offshore sub-sea directly to onshore. We also designed the gas plant in Shetland to allow the site to be completely restored after decommissioning. We did that by building two huge peat stores to safely look after 665,000m3 of peat during the lifetime of production.”

Total E&P UK operates Laggan-Tormore with a 60% interest alongside partners DONG E&P (UK) Limited (20%) and SSE E&P UK Limited (20%).
