Total Shares its Passion for STEM Subjects Across Scotland

Total’s E&P division in Aberdeen works passionately to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects to schools within their areas of operation. Pupils living in the north east of Scotland and the Shetland Islands are given an insight into the importance of studying STEM subjects when considering a career in the oil and gas industry.

Total’s graduates share their knowledge and experience at educational events by presenting working models that they designed themselves. These models give a ‘hands on’ demonstration of the equipment and processes used offshore. From pigging to xmas trees, the models are showcased at educational events such as the Young Engineers and Science Clubs and the OPITO skills week to name just a few.

The division also has a sponsorship agreement with the Edinburgh International Science Festival and in particular the touring science programme ‘Generation Science’. Visiting every one of the 32 local authorities in Scotland (63,357 pupils)*, Generation Science encourages children aged 5 – 12 years old to explore the complexities of science through fun and engaging workshops.

For over six years the division has sponsored the Aberdeen City and Shire heat of the national competition Enterprising Mathematics. Aimed at secondary education, pupils from around 20 schools compete against each other, in teams of four, in a series of mathematical challenges. The winners go on to compete in the Scottish finals and if successful the UK final.

Beyond these organised and sponsored events all staff at the division are encouraged to seize any opportunities to engage with youth groups or at school events to promote STEM activities and the division supports staff in delivering key messages.

Total believes that continuing to reach out to young people with practical and fun STEM activities will encourage them to study STEM subjects as they progress through school and potentially become engineers of the future.
