Road Safety – A Priority for Total!

Total’s UK E&P Division were proud to support road safety initiative “Driving Ambition”, in conjunction with Shetland Islands Council’s Road Safety Unit.

Road Safety workshops were delivered to 200 pupils from Anderson High and Brae secondary schools, close to Total’s new Shetland Gas Plant on the mainland. These workshops aim to increase road safety awareness and reduce the risk of accidents among teenagers who may either be taking driving lessons or already have passed their driving test.

Each workshop included interactive road safety presentations from the police, fire and ambulance services, with examples of the dangers of the road and the causes of accidents. A driving instructor also attended to give information on driving lessons, and tips on how to pass a driving test. Hands-on sessions on basic car maintenance led by a trained mechanic were also delivered.

Jenny Wink, facilities management co-ordinator for Total E&P UK: “Raising awareness of road safety to teenagers in our local community is so important. I attended the Driving Ambition event in 2015 and saw for myself how the emergency services reinforce this important message to senior pupils and the careful yet direct approach they take with them. Road safety is a priority for Total and is an integral part of our global Golden Rules ‘safety at work’ policy. We are pleased to support Shetland Islands Council in their ongoing commitment towards Driving Ambition and their aim to make our roads safer for everyone.”

Total believes that this initiative will have a lasting benefit for all road users in Shetland.
