Ffion Jones

Ffion Jones, from day one, responsibility promotes empowerment

Entrusted and challenged with real responsibility since day one as a Graduate Process Engineer, Ffion is now approaching the end of her graduate development programme. The sheer variety of experience already under her belt has helped to kick-start her engineering career.

Why choose Total?

Having grown up in Aberdeen, I was always drawn to the oil and gas industry – both my parents work in the sector, so you could say energy is in my blood. After graduating with an MEng in Chemical Engineering the chance to join a global business, with opportunities to work overseas, was hard to resist.

During three years of development, Total offers graduates a diverse range of placements and the chance to gain experience of the business as a whole. As a Process Engineer you’re quite Operations-focused, but I’ve really enjoyed the chance to work in other areas, such as Projects, broadening the variety of career options open to me.

What’s exceeded your expectations?

Mentoring support has been excellent. My mentor is a chartered chemical engineer, so I can speak to him whenever I need guidance. That feedback is invaluable; helping me to define the development outcomes I want from each placement. Within each department, my supervisor has always been incredibly supportive, ensuring I’m continually challenged and helping me to develop as an engineer.

The whole Programme has been shaped to help us develop the right competencies as we progress towards chartered status in our respective fields. At the end of the three-year programme, graduates are equipped with the skills they need, and when supplemented by a little extra experience, this allows them to apply for our chartership.
