Andrew, ensuring safe operations at Shetland Gas Plant

As Senior Control Room Operator, Andrew and the Team at the Shetland Gas Plant ensure safe production from the Greater Laggan Area.

A change of direction

I’ve always been interested in the Energy Industry and had my heart set on a rotational shift offshore. As a ‘hands on’ type of person, I knew this career path would enable me to spend weeks in a technically challenging role, whilst enjoying the time off that an offshore rotation brings.

My head was turned however when opportunities were presented on the Greater Laggan Area project. The West of Shetland is an untapped area with huge technical challenges and I was inspired by the commitment Total was making to open up this area. I had to be a part of it!

Building a better future

I joined the project in 2012, working in the Aberdeen office as part of the Greater Laggan Operations Team. The work involved a lot of factory acceptance testing of the Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS), as well as work on the integration of the Subsea and Topsides Control System.

It’s been fascinating to watch the development of a new gas plant and to truly understand the controls put in place to ensure safe production. I’m delighted to be part of the Team that’s put West of Shetland on the map as an important area for the future of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).

I’m based in Shetland and part of the Control Room Team responsible for round the clock monitoring to ensure the safe operation of the plant’s systems. Operationally, the plant, with its effluent water treatment and oil water treatment packages, provides plenty of fresh challenges to get to grips with.
