Quest for Better Energy inspires young minds
Pupils from four regional winning schools gathered in London on 15 June for the Better Energy School Awards National Award Ceremony - a fun-filled day to celebrate their inspirational project-based work. Organised in conjunction with the Young People's Trust for the Environment (YPTE), Total has sponsored the awards – open to every primary school across England, Scotland and Wales – for the past 11 years. Each regional winning finalist won their school £1,000, with the UK National Champions, Wicor Primary School from Portchester in Hampshire, receiving the top prize of £5,000. The school’s ‘Keeping the Buzz at Wicor’ project saw pupils helping to look after several bee hives in the school grounds. Parents received briefing sessions to assuage any safety concerns and the pupils enjoyed the chance to look after hives, even helping to set up a separate colony for the rare red mason bee! More than 253,000 young people have submitted projects since the awards were launched with 23,602 young people taking part in the Awards in 2017.
